New York State passed a law in 2021 establishing staffing minimums at nursing homes that will now begin to be enforced. Up to 75% of nursing homes in NYS currently do not meet these minimum standards and will be in danger of receiving significant fines and other penalties if they do not hire enough staff.
The state will finally begin to enforce these minimum standards in all nursing homes. This is at a time of the "Great Resignation" - which is seeing thousands and thousands of nurses, physicians and other medical professionals walk away from their chosen profession. The home health aide shortage- growing over the past 20 years is at it's worst in this country.
“We’re facing the possibility of real system collapse,” said Dr. John Rugge council member and founder of Hudson Headwaters Health Network.
