Consumer Directed Personal Assistance allows Medicaid recipients in need of personal care, home health and nursing services to recruit, hire, train, supervise and terminate their own personal assistants. This program has become more popular then ever in part because of the lack of home health aides in the work force.

While not simple to manage there is alot of help for families who are interested in the program. CDPAANYS is one of those organizations. They offer assistance to families struggling with the multi-faceted requirements of the program as well as being a voice for the clients and families.

Other groups include NYADD Focus Group- CDPAP. This is a FaceBook group for family members of CDPAP participants and their supporters to share information, ask questions, and advocate together.

One of the most active organizations we have is NYLAG specifically Evelyn Frank Legal-Resources. EFLRP uses a combination of tools, including direct representation, policy advocacy, and public education through http://health.wnylc.com/health/17/

This year the state terminated all CDPAP agency contracts and contracted with one single entity- PPL. This has led to massive confusion and delays for the vast majority of families. The state has been working toward cleaning up this mess. Many law suits have been filed by organizations such as NYLAG.
